Gift Card scam - North Yorkshire Police Warning

We've had a number of recent reports of a gift card scam targeting North Yorkshire residents.

An email is received which appears to be from a friend or colleague asking you to buy a number of gift cards - Google or Apple Pay. The email will usually be from someone you know (their email may have been hacked) and explains they can't buy the gift cards themselves because they are in a meeting or can't get to the shop but that they will pay you back as soon as they can.

The email will also likely ask you to photograph the cards once purchased and send them photos of the unique codes printed on each card.

This allows the scammer to use the gift cards to make online purchases and needless to say you will never see your money again.

Typically the value of the gift cards is around £500.

If you receive an email like this, do not purchase any gift cards. If it is from someone you know, ring them to check if the request is really from them and if not then they need to be alerted their email may have been hacked.

If you work in retail and someone attempts to buy gift cards to a large value, please check they are aware of this scam and that they are certain the request they have received to buy the cards is genuine.

BUS BACK BETTER - questionnaire

Following on from our communication in July 2021 which outlined the councils intent to prepare an Enhanced Partnership Plan and produce a Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP) for the North Yorkshire area, we are now seeking views from stakeholders on bus use in the area, I have attached questionnaire for you to complete.

We are working with incredibly tight timescales to complete and submit our BSIP to government and ask if we could receive completed questionnaires by Friday 3rd September 2021, if this date poses any major issues for you or your organisation please do get in touch.

Phishing email scam

A phishing email scam is currently in circulation which indicates the recipient has files to download and that they should login using their employee credentials to access the files.

The emails reported so far appear to be from one of a number of law firms but could appear from any organisation which may have been compromised so please be very cautious.

If you receive any email which asks you to login to a system to view or download files, don’t click the link without considering:

  • Were you expecting this email or has it come out of the blue, even if it is from a known sender?
  • Have you ever previously been asked to login to a system to view/download files?
  • Are you able to verify with the sender by phone or in person that the email is genuine?

If you receive a phishing email you are reminded that you should follow your own organisations policies and procedures and that you may be required to notify your IT department.  If you do not have an IT department you can forward phishing emails to

If you think you may have received an email and provided your credentials by logging in to a system, notify your IT department immediately. If you do not have an IT department reset your password immediately.

Where possible, enable two/multi-factor authentication (2FA/MFA) on your account as this will help to protect you if your details have been compromised.

The Selby Town High Street Heritage Action Zone has another exciting selection of activities to share!

Locations in Selby are being opened up to residents as part of the national Heritage Open Days scheme to open up hidden historic places.

Every year in September places up and down the country that aren’t usually open to the public throw open their doors to celebrate their heritage, community, and history.  In Selby there will be medieval archaeology to explore, walking tours to highlight the history of the Shopping and Station areas, and story sharing sessions to collect all our memories of Selby and experiences of Selby today.

The Selby Heritage Open Days programme has been developed by a number of local interest groups and supporting partners that includes the HSHAZ. We have a number of events to explore and our partners even more! Visit the Heritage Open Days website to see it all!

Heritage Open Days take place nationally over two weeks from 10 to 19 September. It is England’s largest grass roots heritage festival involving over 40,000 volunteers and 5,000 events. It is coordinated nationally by the National Trust with support from players of the People’s Postcode Lottery.

We would love to get some support at our Heritage Open Days events and make a call here for Volunteers to carry out roles such as stewarding, surveying, and the opportunity to explore our heritage as you go. If you have an interest in volunteering with us, please do get in touch through our website, or by sending us an email to

Don’t forget! We have places available for our Selby Faces workshop on 24 August where you can get the chance to find out about the famous people in Selby’s past and present – and you’ll have the chance to create your own portraits with a watercolour artist. Follow the link to book a place at the workshop.

We look forward to seeing you soon!

All the best
